Tom Robinson plays benefit night for Russian LGBT groups
About the performers:
BARBERFELLAS: An offshoot of the Pink Singers, specialising in spine-tingling close harmony, a capella singing and some very camp routines. Material ranges from musicals to gospel. This spring they are appearing/have appeared in Bologna, Hong Kong – and our own Dulwich Festival of Choirs.
MARCUS REEVES: A singer-songwriter of huge range and versatility, combining sharp lyrics, memorable tunes and a highly theatrical style. He has written musicals (‘Postcards from God’ on the life of Sister Wendy), poetry (‘Sighs Ten’) as well as several EPs, a benefit single ‘Russian Roulette’, and his first full-length CD ‘Quicksilver – the Masquerade Macabre’. ‘Art of Darkness’, a new EP, appears on May 26th. ‘A Genius, a maestro, a misfit’ – David Hoyle. ‘A New Tim Rice’ – Elaine Page.
PETER SCOTT-PRESLAND: The Vera Lynn of the Gay Movement (as it used to be) and almost Last Man Standing as far as early gay singer-songwriters are concerned. In May 1972 did his first original gay cabaret act, in a nasty beige frock, singing original songs to an audience of 300 drunken rugby players. He survived. Since then he has been playwright, librettist, journalist and historian; he has won two Edinburgh Fringe Firsts and been nominated twice for Best Musical. These he wrote with DAVID HARROD his long-time accompanist and writing partner, who appears with him tonight.
SCOTT CAPURRO: is an internationally renowned American comedian, writer and actor based in San Francisco.[1] His comedy material is deliberately provocative, referring often to gay life and culture, politics, race and racism, and popular culture.
LEE FORSYTH GRIFFTHS started as a young soul star from Moston, whose fiercely political debut album ‘Northern Songs’ still scores, 17 years after its release, unanimous 5-star reviews on Amazon. Following a 5-star barney with record producer Trevor Horn he retired from the music industry, only to return in 2007 with his incendiary ‘Armchair Anarchy’. ‘Hippy Dippy’ is a sardonic Mancunian riposte to the Sergeant Pepper generation, while ‘Scared’ is the poignant coming out song of a late developer. Dark satiric wit marries one of the best white soul voices around.
TOM ROBINSON: Tom wrote and sang the sound track of our gay lives from the mid-70s onward, with the original and best anthem, ‘Glad to Be Gay’, followed by ‘Never Going to Fall in Love Again’, co-written with Elton John. ‘2-4-6-8 Motorway’, ‘Don’t Take No for an Answer’ and ‘War Baby’ all had chart success; with his first album in 20 years, ‘Only the Now’, Tom has lost none of his politics, wit, anger or melodic gifts.
