Two new gigs at Tyne Theatre: Sam Bailey in Concert and Boyzlife

Two new gigs at Tyne Theatre: Sam Bailey in
Concert and Boyzlife

Tyne Theatre & Opera House have just announced the addition of two brilliant gigs to
their programme for 2018. Tuesday 9th October will see Boyzlife take to the stage,
while The X Factor winner Sam Bailey will perform on Saturday 3rd November.
Boyzlife brings together members of two of the biggest boybands in history, Boyzone
and Westlife, to perform a whole host of their biggest chart hits.

Brian McFadden enjoyed 12 UK and Ireland number ones as a member of Westlife,
including a record breaking seven top spots in a row. The band also boast four number 1
albums and over 30 million record sales in total. Since Westlife, Brian has enjoyed
international solo success, including a UK number 1 with Real to Me.

With Boyzone, Keith Duffy has enjoyed similar success, including six UK number one
singles and 16 out of 17 of their first single releases making the top 5. With five number
one albums also to their credit, Boyzone achieved worldwide sales of over 25 million.
The unmissable Boyzlife show has already been performed for over 20,000 adoring fans
since the pair came together in 2016. With two completely sold out tours under their
belts in partnership with Hilton Hotels, as well as their unforgettable 2017 December
Christmas Tour, this is a night out that is certainly not to be missed.

2013 X Factor winner and gold selling artist Sam Bailey is once again taking to the stage
to showcase her powerhouse voice in a 2018 UK selected date tour.
Following her X Factor win, Sam’s hit single, Skyscraper, became the UK Christmas No.1.
The following March, Sam’s album was released to high praise and later in 2014, she
embarked on her solo sell-out tour. Since then her career has gone from strength to
strength. So far in 2018, Sam has been busy on stage playing a main role in the UK tour
of the award-winning Broadway show CHICAGO and touring in Kay Mellor’s Fat Friends.
With fans across the world eagerly awaiting new music, Sam’s new material and tour is
highly anticipated and once again set to be a sell-out show.

Theatre Director Joanne Johnson says: “I’m thrilled to add more music to our programme
for 2018 – the Tyne Theatre is a wonderful place to enjoy music with its fantastic acoustics
and intimate auditorium, so these two shows are a must for fans!”
Tickets for Boyzlife are priced at £29. Limited VIP Meet and Greet tickets are

The Feeling bring their Twelve Years and Home Tour to Tyne Theatre & Opera House http://bit.ly/THEFEELINGNCL

The Feeling bring their Twelve Years and
Home Tour to Tyne Theatre & Opera House

Following the success of their very special intimate performance at London’s Apollo
Theatre at the weekend (which sold out in under a minute), The Feeling have
announced that they will perform their celebrated million-selling album Twelve Stops
And Home in full across the UK this October, the band’s first tour for over two years.
The Feeling will be bringing the show to Tyne Theatre & Opera House on Friday 26th
October.

The Feeling have also announced the reissue of Twelve Stops And Home, to celebrate 12 years since the acclaimed album’s release. Having been newly mastered from the original tapes, Twelve Stops And Home will be reissued as a Deluxe 3CD + DVD digibook, and a limited edition double yellow vinyl.

Twelve Stops And Home - named after the Piccadilly Line journey from Leicester Square to Gillespie Sells’ home stop of Bounds Green - was originally released on 5 June 2006. Despite being largely self-recorded in the garden shed of Ciaran and Kevin Jeremiah’s parents’ Sussex home, the album was a hit-the-ground-running masterpiece of fiercely infectious, life-affirming pop, pitched in the rainbow-coloured realm between Queen, the Scissor Sisters, ELO and Supertramp.

Five of the album’s big-hearted and velcro-catchy songs became bona fide hit singles (Sewn, Fill My Little World, Never Be Lonely, Rose and Love It When You Call), helping the band to become the most-played act on British radio in 2006, and earning them the Ivor Novello Award for Songwriters of the Year.
Dan Gillespie Sells said: “I’m so excited to be playing with the band again. To be performing an album that has always meant so much to me is going to be quite an experience! What a party it’s going to be!”

The Feeling are:

Dan Gillespie Sells – vocals & guitar
Richard Jones – bass
Kevin Jeremiah – guitar
Ciaran Jeremiah – keyboards
Paul Stewart – drums
Tickets for The Feeling are priced at £35.50 & £25.50. VIP tickets are available at £85.50. VIP Meet and Greet tickets include a ticket for the event in the best seats, a unique opportunity to meet The Feeling before the venue opens, a photo taken with The Feeling by the VIP Manager, a pre-signed photo of the band and a custom VIP laminate and lanyard.

I S L A N D RELEASE DEBUT ALBUM ‘FEELS LIKE AIR’ ON 6TH APRIL FEATURING THE RECENT SINGLES ‘RIDE’, ‘THE DAY I DIE’ & ‘TRY’

I S L A N D

RELEASE DEBUT ALBUM ‘FEELS LIKE AIR’ ON 6TH APRIL
FEATURING THE RECENT SINGLES ‘RIDE’, ‘THE DAY I DIE’ & ‘TRY’

UK & EUROPEAN HEADLINE TOUR ANNOUNCED
INCLUDING LONDON’S KOKO ON 23RD MAY

16th May  - Newcastle - Cluny 2

“The one band everyone is raving about.” - Huw Stephens (BBC Radio 1)

'Absolutely love' - Annie Mac (BBC Radio 1)

“Impeccable indie newcomers” - Clash

‘One of the most exciting bands at the moment’ - Wonderland

“Delicious” - Metro

Ahead of their UK and European tour dates, we are excited to announce the release of ‘Feels Like Air’, the debut album from ISLAND, out 6th April Via French Kiss. The band will also play a very special headline show at London’s iconic KOKO on 23rd May.

Inspired by the band’s extensive time on the road, ‘Feels Like Air’ follows recent hit singles ’Try’, ‘The Day I Die’, and ‘Ride’, which have reached an incredible combined total of over 1.6 million Spotify streams.

Following two acclaimed EPs and a busy 12 months establishing themselves as ones-to-catch on live circuits across the UK and Europe, the band have built a reputation as one of 2018’s most important break out acts.

Not just content with commanding the stage, the band are now gaining fans in Radio 1’s Huw Stephens, Annie Mac and  BBC 6 Music. Not forgetting of course blistering sets across Europe’s tastemaker festivals like Hamburg’s Reeperbahn Festival, UK’s The Great Escape and headlining the BBC Introducing Stage at Reading and Leeds Festival last year.

In keeping to their DIY approach to making music, ‘Feels Like Air’ was written and produced entirely by the band and includes all new music. Drawing on influences from their shared love of artists like Fleetwood Mac, Kings of Leon, War On Drugs and Grizzly Bear, their debut offering, with its hook-filled anthemic choruses and inventive drumming, is a body of work two years in the making. This is a band that has spent time carefully honing their craft, so as  to capture the sound and energy of their live performances.

The album opens with the band’s most recent single, ‘Ride’. Led by emotive, 80s-influenced guitar riffs and the impassioned vocal stylings of enigmatic frontman Rollo Doherty, the track epitomises the nostalgic, yet refreshing sound that fans of the band have grown to love.

The eleven-track album progresses through a range of emotions, experimenting with the downtempo and cinematic on tracks such as, ‘We Can Go Anywhere’ and title track ‘Feels Like Air’, while ‘Horizon’ and ‘God Forgive’, with their dreamy vocals and infectious drum beats owe as much to early 90s-era shoe gaze as they do to the lo-fi, minimal sound preferred by producers such as Jamie XX and Kaytranada.

Previous single ‘The Day I Die’, add yets another layer to this impressive body of work, slowing down the tempo, but still retaining their signature, venue-filler sound. The self-assured, bluesy number touches once more on the anthemic and speaks about finding the power to escape the mundane.

After two EPs and hundreds of live dates, ‘Feels Like Air’ is ISLAND at their most impressive and accomplished - the confident sound of a young band in their stride, upping the game and creating something sonically and qualitatively different.

JOSH OKEEFE

ANNOUNCES SUMMER FESTIVAL SHOWS AND DATES WITH LINDI ORTEGA

WATCH ‘I WON’T LET YOU DOWN’ (GEMSONVHS SESSION) HERE

+ LISTEN TO MOVING TRACK ‘GRENFELL TOWER FIRE’

"He seems to turn a light bulb on in your head, makes you ask yourself questions and seems to say what is on the tip of everyone’s tongue. Is he the next commentator for this generation? Only time will tell.” - Huffington Post

"Okeefe’s voice hits you with the force of a hurricane: a rare, powerful, gravelly sound, the likes of which is usually crafted from many decades of nicotine, alcohol and hard living in the deep south.” - No Depression

He is an outlaw and he is commercial. He is topical and he is light. He is a poet, a musician, a writer, and maybe a prophet. - Gary Green (Folkways Recording Artist)

US / UK troubadour JOSH OKEEFE is delighted to announce a busy summer schedule of festival appearances and live shows with the singular Lindi Ortega.

The aspiring singer-songwriter from England via Tennessee will be supporting Lindi at a string of UK dates kicking off at Sheffield's The Leadmill on 5th June 2018 through to her final show at The Garage in London on the 14th June.

However, extending his visit with a number of festival appearances across the land, there’ll be many more chances to catch Josh throughout the month as he calls into the likes of Fire In The Mountain Festival (Aberwrystwyth), and other festivals across the summer. Full dates and details below.

Turning heads with his first tour of the UK last summer, Josh returns following a year of near constant travelling across the US and omnipresently performing with artists across the Nashville scene at noteworthy spots like Layla's and Roberts Western World on Lower Broadway where one could see him either taking centre stage or playing the harmonica for someone else. On his ongoing quest to pen songs founded on substance, the last year has seen Josh notably put in emotional performances at Grenfell Tower’s Wall of Truth (a public space collating first hand accounts, facts, testimonies and statements created by and for members of the community affected), as well as performing at a gathering for Black Lives in Tennessee (as reported on by Huffington Post); both of which have been hard-hitting and inspirational new chapters in Josh’s own living songbook.

Often compared to the likes of Bob Dylan, Pete Seeger and Woody Guthrie, Josh Okeefe is a worthy bearer of the torch lit by such folk legends who have gone before him. Like his heroes, he is an artist who prefers to let the songs do the talking, an enigmatic character with a penchant for the unpredictable. So what can we expect from Josh’s upcoming visit then?

"Who knows?” says Josh. “We will have to wait and see. One thing I do know is that there ain't nothing better than playing music for folks, especially in the UK."

With rumours of a new album in the works it seems the singer is keeping his cards close to chest for the time being, our only taster of what may appear on the record Josh’s incredibly moving ‘Grenfell Tower Fire’ video that emerged online earlier this year and as yet unreleased track ‘I Won’t Let You Down’ (as seen on his GemsOnVHS session).

However, those who have already seen Josh performing in the flesh from his former visits here will know to expect an stripped back acoustic set with an electric atmosphere, supercharged by Josh’s emotive songcraft.

JOSH OKEEFE WILL PLAY THE FOLLOWING UK DATES

FRIDAY 1st JUNE – FIRE IN THE MOUNTAIN FESTIVAL, ABERWRSTWYTH

TUESDAY 5th JUNE - THE LEADMILL, SHEFFIELD *

WEDNESDAY 6th JUNE – ORAN MOR, GLASGOW  *

In 2012, Derby, England native and folk-singer Josh Okeefe dropped out of school, traveled across the Atlantic and arrived in Nashville, TN in search of the places his idols Hank Williams and Johnny Cash once graced. He became a regular in the rock and roll clubs on the east side and the legendary honky-tonks on Lower Broadway; met a host of other musicians and began writing songs at an astonishing pace.

Over a couple of nights in his 350 sq. ft Tennessee log cabin Okeefe recorded his critically acclaimed self-titled debut album with just a borrowed RCA Microphone from the 1960’s that vibrated its diaphragm and carbon to the to the voices of Patsy Cline, Johnny Cash, Guy Clark, and other towering specters of country music. and an Ampex 2-track Tape Machine which Okeefe purchased from JJ Cale’s estate for $100.

Catapulting himself into the spotlight Josh Okeefe has already performed with the likes of Alison Krauss and Jamey Johnson, earned headline festival spots and BBC Radio appearances, sang for the people at national and local protests and had his songs recorded by major label artists like Ashley Monroe and High Valley to name a few and this is just the start…

CELEBRITY GALA NIGHT RAISES £80,000 FOR REGIONAL CHARITY

CELEBRITY GALA NIGHT RAISES £80,000 FOR REGIONAL CHARITY

A STAR-STUDDED red carpet event held in the North East last month (March) has raised more than £80,000 for a leading charity.

A host of famous faces turned out to the gala performance of Sting’s musical, The Last Ship, to raise money for The Graham Wylie Foundation.

Stars on the night included Sting himself, along with Kaiser Chiefs’ Ricky Wilson and Nick Baines, Alan Shearer and Denise Welch.

Also on the red carpet were Joe McElderry and Hairy Biker Si King, along with  charity patron, Lee Westwood who all attended the special performance of the show at Newcastle’s Northern Stage.

The show was followed by a party at the city’s Wylam Brewery which included a performance by Sting.

Generous guests helped raise more than £80,000 on the night, which will now be used to support the Newcastle-based charity, which was formed to ‘help, inspire and educate children across the region.’

And a substantial donation from money raised is also being given to Newcastle charity FACT – Fighting All Cancers Together.

“I am absolutely delighted that our gala night raised such and amazing sum of money for the foundation and also for FACT,” said Graham Wylie.

“Our guests were incredibly generous, and this money will really help make a difference.”

The Graham Wylie Foundation has built the first Nordoff Robbins music therapy centre outside London at the Matron’s Lodge of the former Fleming Hospital at Jesmond.

This was officially opened by Wallsend-born Sting the day after the gala performance, who was joined by the Kaiser Chiefs, who carried out the ground breaking ceremony at the centre last year.

“Both Sting and Kaiser Chiefs have been incredible supporters of our work, and we are thrilled that they were able to help us officially launch the centre,” said Mr Wylie.

“I would like to take this opportunity to offer my thanks on behalf of everyone involved with the foundation, to Sting - who is without doubt one of the biggest talents this region has ever produced – for everything he has done for us and also Karl Sydow, the producer of The Last Ship, for all his help and support.

“We hope this legacy will live on for many years to come through the music therapy work which is now changing the lives of vulnerable and isolated people of all ages across the region.”

Former Boyzone frontman Ronan Keating will headline a 1990s-inspired line up on Friday, performing some of the band’s biggest hits along with his own solo chart-toppers.

Tickets have been released in four stages to allow early buyers the chance to take advantage of the best prices.

Early Bird and first release tickets sold out earlier in the year and now organisers report that the second wave is selling very quickly.

“The way we have organised it has been to release tickets in four waves so people who bought early would receive the best deals,” said festival organiser Alex Hutchinson.

“Our Early Bird tickets flew out the door, swiftly followed by the first wave and now we are seeing the second tier is close to selling out.  Once these are gone, we will be making our third and final selection of advance tickets available, and that will be the last chance to buy.

“This is a totally new event and we always knew it was going to be popular, and sales have reflected this. We anticipate that the whole event will sell out very, very quickly once all the tickets have been released so I’d advise anyone who wants to be there to get booking as soon as possible.”

Shuttle bus services will be provided for both shows and will run from Sunderland, Newcastle, Durham, Gateshead, Hartlepool and Middlesbrough on both days, while free parking will also be available at the venue.

GARY LUCAS : Grammy-nominated songwriter and composer to play @TheCluny 5th May

GARY LUCAS
GRAMMY-NOMINATED SONGWRITER AND COMPOSER
ANNOUNCES UK LIVE DATES
FOR MAY

The World of Captain Beefheart is a comprehensive overview of the man also known as Don van Vliet’s towering legacy, re-imagined and infused with new blood by vocalist extraordinaire Nona Hendryx and avant-guitar legend Gary Lucas; this pair starred in a symphonic Beefheart Tribute with Amsterdam’s famed 65-piece Metropole Orchestra at the Paradiso a few years ago.  The album was co-produced by Gary and Jess Krakow, recorded at Eastside Sound in NYC. The World of Captain Beefheart is being released by Knitting Factory Records on November 10.

The World of Captain Beefheart strikes a fine balance between the more bluesy and groove-accessible songs in the good Captain’s oeuvre and the more extreme, darker and weirder side.

The former is well represented by “Sun Zoom Spark” and “Her Eyes are a Blue Million Miles” from Beefheart’s 1973 Clear Spot album, “Too Much Time” and “When It Blows Its Stacks” from 1972’s The Spotlight Kid, “Sure ’Nuff ’n Yes I Do” and “I’m Glad" from Safe as Milk, and “Tropical Hot Dog Night” from 1977’s Shiny Beast. The latter is explored via “When Big Joan Sets Up” and “Sugar ’n Spikes” from 1969’s Trout Mask Replica, and “The Smithsonian Institute Blues” from 1970’s Lick My Decals Off, Baby.

Nona Hendryx is a longtime fierce admirer of Don Van Vliet's music, and possesses the huge voice and the commanding stage presence necessary to do full justice to repertoire that originally featured Beefheart’s unforgettable multi-octave voice. All though she’s best known as a funk/soul great thanks to her long tenure with international hitmakers Labelle (as well as the group’s antecedent, Patti Labelle and the Bluebelles) as well as her own excellent R&B-rooted solo outing but is no stranger to experimental, rock territory having been featured as guest vocalist with cutting-edge ensembles including Talking Heads, Bil Laswell’s Material, and Jerry Harrison’s Casual Gods.

Gary Lucas first made his mark as an incendiary, visionary guitar player on the final last two Beefheart albums, Doc at the Radar Station (1980) and Ice Cream for Crow (1982). A world-renowned instrumentalist and Grammy-nominated songwriter and composer, Gary has released over 30 acclaimed albums in a variety of genres—including last year’s tribute to the soundtracks to Max Fleischer’s cartoons: “Gary Lucas’ FLEISCHEREI”— which was chosen as one of the Best Albums of the Year by DownBeat.

Ably supporting these two are expert practitioners of Beefheartian derring-do Jesse Krakow on bass and Richard Dworkin on drums--both veterans of Fast ’N Bulbous, Lucas’ free-jazz instrumental outfit that specializes in repertoire from the Van Vliet canon. Completing the is keyboardist Jordan Shapiro, who’s played with Gary in his long-running avant-rock crew, Gods and Monsters.

Don Van Vliet a/k/a Captain Beefheart   has been provoking and enchanting music lovers since 1966, emerging full-blown out of the High Mojave Desert with a rendition of Bo Diddley’s “Diddy Wah Diddy” which earned him an appearance cavorting in surf on ABC’s “Where the Action Is” and an on-air interview via phone with Dick Clark on “American Bandstand” while the kids dutifully boogied to this intense blues-rock blast.

In the years that followed, Captain Beefheart achieved worldwide notoriety as one of the most singular voices and uncompromising composers in relatively popular music, a trail-blazing maverick genius who single-handedly changed the face of music as we know it via a series of ground-breaking albums with a series of Magic Band line-ups starting with 1967’s “Safe as Milk” and finishing with 1982’s “Ice Cream for Crow.” His music combined Delta blues, free-jazz, and proto-punk rock with surrealist imagery, ecological obsession, and the highest and airiest of wit. It was a unique and unforgettable sound which proved highly influential on the first wave of punk and new-wave pioneers including John “Rotten” Lydon, Joe Strummer of the Clash , and Talking Heads’ David Byrne as well as seminal artists such as David Lynch, Laurie Anderson, Ed Ruscha, Woody Allen, Julian Schnabel, and Matt Groening.  On stage and on record, Don Van Vliet explored musical and lyrical territory never before charted in the confines of a traditional electric band line-up.

He retired after releasing 13 astonishing albums to concentrate on painting. Van Vliet's tragic passing in 2010 (from complications of MS) saw him eulogized the New York Times editorial pages.

Yet, to this day, Don Van Vliet remains a cult hero, relatively unknown in mainstream circles. If any album is able to change that it’s The World of Captain Beefheart.
